iPhone 13 Pro loses bluetooth connection to car 2-8 minutes after starting a phone call

I recently purchased a new iPhone 13 Pro (then exchanged for an iPhone 13 Pro Max) to replace my iPhone XR. Here is the info on the problem I am seeing for your developers:

Hardware: iPhone 13 Pro Max, running iOS 15.0.2

Car: 2016 Toyota Avalon

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Start Car
  2. Allow phone to connect with car via bluetooth.
  3. Start a phone call
  4. Connection between the car and phone fails anywhere from 2-8 minutes after the call starts.
    1. The phone call continues on the phone, but the car thinks the call has ended. After this point bluetooth functionality no longer works properly until I restart the car.

Other details:

- The phone has no issues playing bluetooth audio to the car. Issue only happens on phone calls.

- My old iPhone XR did not have this problem, but was not running iOS 15.

Steps I have taken to fix the problem:

  1. Stopped/started bluetooth service on iPhone
  2. Enabled then disabled Airplane mode on iPhone
  3. Re-paired the iPhone to the car after forgetting bluetooth settings on both devices.
  4. Restart iPhone
  5. Force restart iPhone
  6. Updated software on car
  7. Reset all settings on iPhone
  8. Disabled 5G (settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data Settings -> Voice & Date = LTE)
  9. Exchanged my iPhone 13 Pro for an iPhone 13 Pro Max, still have the issue

The iPhone is unusable for calls in my car which is really frustrating. Hopefully someone out there has seen something like this and has a solution/workaround. Or maybe this will make it to the developers and they can try and fix the issue.

Today I ran another experiment. I still have my original (working) iPhone XR. I gifted it to my son when I upgraded to the iPhone 13 Max. Here is what I did:

  1. Upgraded the iPhone XR to iOS 15.1
  2. Connected the phone to my car
  3. Drove around on a call with the iPhone XR connected

At no time did the iPhone XR disconnect or drop the call that I was on. I drove in many spots where the iPhone 13 Pro Max disconnected/dropped calls.

I plan on running a couple more controlled experiments on my iPhone 13 Pro Max over the next few days. One when connected to bluetooth in our other car (not a Toyota) and another in my Toyota but not moving. We'll see what happens.

Hopefully someone at Apple will see this thread and find this info helpful when trying to fix/recreate the issue.

I just upgraded to iOS 15.1 and I still have the issue. This time, when I lost connection to the car the call dropped as well. I'm pretty certain that this happened at least one other time with iOS 15.0.2, but I was unable to repeat the issue so I did not call it out in my initial post.

After the call dropped today I continued to have the same symptoms as above. The bluetooth connection between my phone and car no longer worked properly.

I too have had the same issues!!

i upgraded from an iPhone XR to an iphone13 about 3 weeks ago and yes It is very frustrating to say the least because 75% of my phone calls are on Bluetooth and while driving.

I have called apple support about this issue, i have been to the Apple Store and had a hard reset on my phone there and have upgraded to new iOS every single time a new update comes out and still having the same issues.

i use a blue parrot headset while driving and its almost like it’s loosing cell service but then you can hear all the static of what it sounds like when not getting good cell phone service. What I have started doing is manually pressing the audio tab during a phone call and toggling from headset, to iPhone, to iPhone speaker back to head set. Sometimes this clears it up after 2 or 3 attempts sometimes it does not. And I’ve noticed it seems to ALWAYS do it when driving and going down into a lower area.

ive also had this same issue while at home walking around inside my house talking on my apple AirPod pros and have the same issues which it connecting to my 2018 Toyota Tundra. I personally think it’s a Bluetooth connection issue when paired to a device and on a phone call only. I have not had this issue happen as of yet while playing iTunes to my vehicle. Hope they address this soon.

I hope they come out with a fix soon because I also have issues with Spotify randomly dropping and then sometimes picking back up later and sometimes not at all until I toggle the Bluetooth connection on and off. Since it seems this is an issue many are experiencing, I would hope apple would do something about it.

I had a Toyota shop tell me that they have ALWAYS had issues when it comes to apple and iOS with keeping up with updates for the Etune radios in their vehicles. They said they have seen less issues when contacts are not allowed and the connected device is only used for music , but in all respect, Toyota should make it ALL work together anyways. With the the new iphone13 , I personally think it’s a hardware issue with the Bluetooth in the device and not in IOS.

im no Apple guru , just my opinion. I know when using Apple AirPod pros, connected to my 2018 Toyota Tundra, or my Blue Parrot hands free headset, i have connectivity issues with all three.

Only way that I’ve figured out to temporarily fix the issue is to toggle from the connected Bluetooth device in IPhone Audio while on a call from connected Bluetooth device to speaker, to iPhone, back to Bluetooth device. Usually it takes 1,2 or maybe 3 times doing this and it will reconnect back to the Bluetooth device for an unknown period of time before having to repeat. Also , I have noticed there seem to be certain areas where it “triggers” the connectivity issues, which leads me to believe it could be a 5g issue as well, but that’s just speculation for now

2016 Toyota Tundra.

Iphone 13 Pro, version 15.1.1

I have the issue as well. Music from spotify works fine in car, no drops. Phone calls drop after about 2-3 minutes. VERY ANNOYING. My sons iphone 10 does not have any issues with music or dropping calls. My s20 ultra never dropped calls or music. I know the cars bluetooth is functional as the issue only happens with my new iPhone.

I think majority of the issues with calls disconnecting from bluetooth within 5 - 8 minutes on a newer device (iphone) is a result of compatibility issue with the car's stereo system.

Review link below to find the make/model of vehicle (toyota), year and the manufacturer of the device. It will show what device models are compatible. Try different years and you'll notice the later car years have the latest iphones shown as being compatible, ie iphone 13

Hope this helps

Well shoot... I need to upgrade my truck now?

I mean, there should not be an issue with having a simple phone call using bluetooth. It seems that compatibility issues would be geared more towards advanced features with the stereo software(s).

Today on a phone call it actually rebooted my stereo. The call was still going but I switched to phone speaker. When the stereo came back up it reconnected and the call went on without disconnecting again. Upon making a follow up call the disconnection continued.

This is driving me crazy. I have tried everything recommended here also. I called Toyota and they do not have any type of resolve for the issue as their app isn’t even working properly. Most people here have older Toyotas without CarPlay if I read correctly. I’m not sure at this point if it’s an iPhone 13 problem or a Toyota problem. My iPhone X worked just fine also.

I can pair my new iPhone 13 with my 2010 Volvo XC 60, but can’t make or receive any calls through the car. My 11 Pro Max worked just fine. I have removed the car from the handset and the handset from the car. Added it back again. Nothing works. It can pair sand synchronize but that’s about it. I may have to switch to my Samsung Note 10+ because, after reading all these threads, Apple seems to not care one bit about this issue

Same issues. 2016 4Runner with no car play. Unusable. Spent an hour on the phone with apple today. Uploaded diagnostics from my phone. They told me to call Verizon, it was a network issue. Huh? Bluetooth has nothing to do with Verizon. Should have returned this immediately when the problem started but I thought there is no way this wouldn’t be sorted out soon. Wish I had my X back. 15.1.1
