iPad Pro 10.5inch Faint White Spot Above Home Button

Hi all!

I have a bright spot about 1-2 inches above the home button on my iPad Pro 10.5 inch wifi model. i just noticed the white spot last week when I was looking at some white background content, the spot does not appear on darker colors like black, grey, blue -most prominent on white.

I took it in to the local authorized service center here in Manila (PowerMac) and the "engineer" told the customer representative I was talking to that it was pressure damage. Interesting judgement considering that I have a tempered glass screen protector (no scratches or cracks) and the official Apple keyboard since the day I bought my iPad Pro, plus a rear clear protector. iPad Pro, keyboard, and screen protector are only 5 months old.

They never explained to me what pressure damage is, but it's obviously not the reason for the white spot on my iPad pro. Because pressure damage would certainly crack the tempered screen protector before damaging the screen, and then there's the Apple keyboard that protects the entire front when it's closed. They only said that they don't cover any screen repairs on the iPad Pro and that I would have to pay the equivalent of a new iPad Pro if I wanted it repaired because they don't repair the model. - Really? for an "authorized premium reseller and service center"???? Touted as the biggest in the Philippines too!!!!

Anyway, the point I'm making is the bright white spot is not pressure damage because it's soft in appearance, not like when you stab the screen or hit it hard, or step/sit on it. It's very faint, looks like a small soft cloud, but it's there. There's no damage to any other part of the iPad Pro. AND it's the exact same type of issue reported by several users in Mac Rumors and they got their iPad Pro replaced immediately by Apple. So how come my issue is not recognized by the largest Apple reseller in the Philippines and they won't even explain the issue, nor will they offer to help me contact Apple for help. They just said try contacting Apple online and if I get help then come back for service. Great.

So please let me know how to get my iPad Pro repaired/replaced because it is still under Apple warranty, has a valid issue/defect, and is the same type of issue reported by other users in the US and they got theirs replaced immediately (because the Apple stores in the US know what type of issue this is)?

Thank you!

I have exactly same problem. This is definitely a design problem, the connection between screen and motherboard is giving a pressure on the screen. The bright spot problem happens exactly after end of 1-year warranty. Seems like Apple is forcing customers to by AppleCare, with "calculated" poor quality.

To everyone here!

Everyone who has this issue that has posted into this discussion is only talking amongst themselves in this lone, soltiary post discussion.

You are making Apple aware of nothing as Apple and any of its product teams and/or employees are NOT here, nor participate in these Apple supoort communities.

With the exception of Apple support community content moderators and specialist, NO ONE of ANY direct responsibility from Apple reads or participates in ANYTHING here in these communities.

The Apple product technical support communities are made up of, largely, of Apple product CUSTOMERS/USERS, just like you.

We are all just users here that help each other solve our Apple product issues in a web community supplied to us by Apple.

The only way to get Apple to, DIRECTLY, listen to you is to use their feedback portion of their website.

Cognizant Apple employees read ALL feedback generated from all of the various feedback pages and transfers the data to the proper and responsible Apple teams and personnel , but NO Apple employees will ever respond with any type of direct, individual replies from the feedback you post.

The more users that post product feedback about any product issue, the faster Apple is made aware and starts working on a fix/solution for a future software update or product issue recall.

Also, you may want to phone contact Apple, directly in Cupertino, California, and calmly talk to an Apple customer service employee about this issue via the link below.

I have the same problem on both of my i pads. Had an appointment this morning at the local apple store. Since my i pads are just one year, and a couple weeks old, all i was offered was an exchange for a cost of over 400 dollars. The amazing thing is that i found the very problem with display models at the apple store. They just don't want to replace these, and they know there is a problem. I'm very angry about it. Was about to buy a Mac-book Pro, guess what, NOT HAPPENING!! Apple has milked me for the last dollar! I expect better from a trillion dollar company.

I have the iPad Pro 10.5. I have the same problem. I went to apple store today. They refuse to replace for me. He just kept saying that I didn’t buy the apple care when I bought the iPad. I have iPad mini2,mini4,iPad Air 2, new iPad 2017. They never had any problems. Why do I have to buy apple care? This is totally design faults. I saw so many people have the same problem. They should have recall all the problem iPad

I found this post searching for information because I also have a 10.5" iPad Pro that I bought September 10, 2017 and I have just noticed that it has a bright spot. The spot is between 1/4" in diameter and a little NE of the Home button (about an inch away). I did not buy Apple Care on this iPad because I was not expecting to have issues. I always carry it in a durable flip case with a screen protector on it and if I ever carry it in a bag I set it with the screen side against my laptop or another flat surface specifically to avoid pressure damage. I'm monitoring the spot but I'm pretty upset about this as I typically use it for annotating PDFs -- this means that I can almost always see the spot on a white background. I thought I should comment because I think there needs to be ongoing public record on the number of people who are experiencing this.

Having read through the reply’s I though I’d also add that myself is having exactly the same problem!

A white blotch much lighter than the remainding screen just about 1/4 aboveboard the home button. This clearly is a repeating problem for many iPad sold in 2017 and possibly arises within a 3-12 month period of use, is it pressure damage as the Apple advisors say?

Possibly created from some form of pressure when applied to the screen, but my question is why are almost all the location of the blotch in the same area?

I would believe that this is down to a design fault and poor QC, to support that I have been demonstrated by a sales representive in a known retail shop here in the uk that when the home button is pressed it apparently pushes onto the screen causing some type of rainbow effect to become visible, this was explained to me when looking into why my device warranty in which I was then further directed to Apple.

I further explored the Internet including YouTube to also find a video of exactly the same fault and you guessed it SAME EXACT location!

I’ve listed all of these sources as I’ve got an appointment with GB this coming Monday and plan to show the advisor including this post.

I’ll keep you all informed on the outcome.

Such a fantastic product but definitely not acceptable from trillion dollar company!

Hello, I’m from manila and experienced the same problem. Booked an appointment at Beyond the Box V-mall. The tech did some diagnostics on it. Then they decided to check it out more so I had to leave the unit with them. After three days, I got an update on their servicing website that they did detect a hardware defect on my ipad pro 10.5. (I too had a tempered glass protector when I brought it in.)

Now I’m waiting for my replacement unit.

I got the same problem since 2nd month year of 2018 until today.....Can’t resist anymore first it’s just a tiny annoying white spot in separate directions but almost near in home button I’ve been iOS user since it was released in Manila,Philippines and never encounter this issue both iPad and iPhone. I’m a bit sensitive person when it comes to gadget so all of my gadgets even my kiddos iPads were tempered glass and otter box/UAG cases equipped lastly with own hand carrying bags....Now how on earth will I drop it or abuse it? I did visit MALL OF ASIA POWERMAC and address the issue sadly it was out of warranty but it can be fixed by paying half the price of a BRAND NEW!!!!***!!! It’s a 12.9” the price is not a joke. If I recall the service staff says approx P25,000-P27,000 PESOS for the screen replacement...........Wow! until now my iPad Pro 12.9” stays the same with a 3” white spots and seems getting bigger........Just hope APPLE won’t tell a Lie about the cause.....it ain’t mishandling or whatever! Also my apple iWatch imagine fully charged but drained within 5-6 hours......how funny is that! Not even in use it’s just turned off and never use in closet!!!

Hi all,

same here. First to know, i bought my iPad 10.5 at Ebay. First i had no issues with the device. Really nice to work with. Some month later i realized the same issues like you. It's big like one cent and a little over the home button. The warranty is now over and apple don't want to support me because ending warranty. I was in the store in Cologne (Germany). In my point of view it's a design failure like the antenna gate at iPhone or stone gate at MacBooks with retina display. The iPad was in a case and was always shielded. Apple should replace all displays because it's not Users fault.

For me, at the moment i have enough from this expensive devices. That is no more Apple Quality like in history.

I don't wan to buy a device for 1000 Euro that could be broken in a year what's no user fault.

Sascha - I’ve had the exact same experience as you and am very disappointed with Apple’s response (I own a lot of Apple stock and complaining direct to Apple with that leverage hasn’t even helped me at all). I think affected iPad owners just need to keep complaining loudly and hoping that eventually we will be heard. It does occasionally work.
